How GPA is Calculated

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing those products, then dividing by the total credit hours. A course worth 4 credits counts more than a 1-credit elective.

GPA Calculator FAQ

What is a good GPA?
For college admissions, a 3.5+ GPA is generally considered strong. Most universities accept students with GPAs between 2.5 and 4.0. For graduate school, a 3.0+ is typically the minimum, with competitive programs wanting 3.5+. Many employers look for a 3.0+ as a baseline.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale for all classes equally. Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses โ€” typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment classes. Colleges often recalculate GPAs on their own scale, so both matter.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Add all your courses from every semester, then calculate as normal. The more credit hours a course carries, the more it impacts your cumulative GPA. One bad semester early in college has less impact over time as you add more credits.
Can I raise my GPA significantly?
It depends on how many credits you have. If you have 30 credits at a 2.5 GPA, earning 15 credits of straight A's brings you to about 2.83. The more credits you've already earned, the harder it is to move the needle โ€” but consistency over time does work.
